The Cataloochee Divide Trail . . . not too many people find this trail or don't take time to stop and hike on it, but it has a wonderful variety of wildflowers. And . . . it's not even a very difficult trail . . . very pleasant!

What do the leaves look like? Are they flat on the ground and lancelet?

They are very long, elliptical or oblong leaves, about 6-10 inches in length, but they are not flat on the ground. Rather, they grow out from a central point very close to the ground. The leaves are very bright green, smooth, with a pronounced central vein denting the entire length of the leaf. The bluebead lily has similarly shaped leaves, but they are shiny and very dark green. The speckled wood lily grows at lower elevations than the bluebead lily, which prefers much higher altitudes. I have found bluebead lilies in abundance near Clingman's Dome and Andrew's Bald.
